Target Audience

Clinical staff such as physicians, behavioralists, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, medical students, and case managers.

Activity Goal

The goal of this interactive activity is to provide learners with common clinical and cross-cultural scenarios that build a framework of knowledge and skills for delivering quality care to diverse patient populations.

Learner Objectives/Outcomes - At the conclusion of the activity, learners will be able to:

  • Integrate appropriate LGBTQ community-specific terminology in a respectful way.
  • Explain the laws governing LGBTQ individual rights and how they impact interactions within the healthcare environment.
  • Distinguish healthcare issues specific to LGBTQ individuals.
  • Implement strategies for creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for LGBTQ individuals to improve their experience of care and outcomes.

This activity is designed to address the following ACGME/ABMS, IOM, and IEC competencies: Patient care and procedural skills, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, provide patient-centered care, and interprofessional communication.
